Six wheelchair accessible apartments providing disabled holidays in a converted and renovated cotton mill, that dates from the 1880’s on the banks of the River Jaudy. Purpose built for accessibility these apartments are now open for business. Large, low windows allow wheelchair users a good view of the river at the bottom of the garden and the perfect sunset we seem to get every night.
All apartments have two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two singles, an open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge. The large accessible bathroom is probably the most important room in each apartment (judging from the questions we get!) All have level access showers with wheeled shower chairs and there is enough space for all pieces of equipment that may be required. Built over three floors the property has been fitted with a lift making wheelchair access a breeze.
Please note, the lift is a high quality and very costly investment for ineedaholidaytoo, not a stair lift or some other type of comedy lift as found in some places. (sorry, but I had to say that due to the number of questions regarding the type of lift we have here.) During the past twelve months we have had several styles of wheelchairs and sccoters using the lift - from the hugest power chairs through to different styles of manual chairs, all have managed the lift with no problems.
All the apartments can accommodate up to six people, for larger families we do have spare mattresses, etc. If you do have a large family or wish to accommodate a group please do ask for more information, we are always willing to offer discounts for multiple bookings and also can advise you what the best scenario is for you.
The apartments are furnished very similarly, we have thought about what the best options are trying to make it all as wheelchair friendly as possible. There is a lot of space in each apartment, so even the largest power chair has space to move around and still not be bumping into things.
The kitchens are fully fitted, with a washing machine, cooker, hob, microwave and all the usual gadgets and utensils that you would expect. In the open plan lounge/diner there is a corner sofa, just the place for kicking back, with Satellite TV, DVD and surround sound system. The dining area has a large table and chairs and in some of the apartments you will have internet access with your own PC. (The larger apartments 1,3 and 6). For the smaller apartments (2 and 4) there are communal PC's available 24/7 for you to use.
Tourist information, a local notice board and a large well stocked library with books and games are situated in the communal hallway. If you want to read something by all means do, if you don't finish it you can take it away with you, all we ask is that you leave a book. If you want to donate any reading material, again please do. We are always looking for books and magazines......it keeps me going during the winter! (Jacqui)
There is a large, 'fairly' wheelchair accessible garden available for those lazy summer evenings. The garden has been maturing over the past twelve months and is lovely, lush and green, this ensures a safe environment for all, with a childrens play area, and enough room to play wheelchair football (You power pack hooligans! You know who you are!!). There is also a large tearrace, with garden furniture, sun loungers and a BBQ, ideal for eating, or just sitting out relaxing.
In the garden you may also hear some strange noises in the undergrowth - look out for Doris and Dennis our resident pot bellied pigs, quite the stars with our guests, you can feed them anything and everyone soon gets into the habit of feeding all their leftovers to them. To top it all off is the stunning location, with the river lazily meandering its way at the bottom of the garden (as long as the tide is in.)
Having a tidal estuary at the bottom of the garden creates stunning views but also means there is a height difference of around six (6) meters between the top of the garden and the estuary at the bottom, a series of wheelchair accessible winding paths enable people to move from top to bottom without too much trouble but assistance is available if required.
We are often asked if we will accept dogs, which we do in general. With a dog of our own, two cats and two pot bellied pigs, any animals must be sociable. This is by prior arrangement only - please tell us if you want to bring a pet with you.
La Roche-Derrien is a small village with all the necessities situated around its pretty market square, the town has a large amount of history with several buildings dating to medieval times. There are several shops, a bar, bakers, butchers and a delicatessen around the square and a weekly market is held on a Friday morning.
